Vor etwas mehr als einem Jahr haben wir unseren ersten Nutzungsvertrag erhalten. Die Burner Embassy ist seit dem gewachsen und gediehen, und wir haben schon viele schöne Tage und Abende im Raum selbst (vor allem vor Corona), auf der Terrasse und im Hof verbracht. Wir hatten vor und auch nach dem ersten Lockdown so gut wie jede Woche Veranstaltungen. Das waren die üblichen fünf monatlichen Veranstaltungen des Berlin Burner e.V. (während des Multiverse-Burn sogar jeden Tag in der Woche), die Planungsmeetings für die Sommerevents (vor dem Lockdown), unsere Sichtbarkeit durch Teilnahme an dem monatlichen Haus der Statistik KO-Markt, durch Außen-Kunst und Unterstützung der Rainbow-Week im HdS durch queere Burner*innen. Außerdem gab es eine ganze Reihe von Events aus der Burner Community, Arbeitstreffen von anderen Pioniergruppen aus dem Haus und unsere Burns zur Eröffnungsfeier (damals konnten noch >150 Leute kommen) und zum Multiverse-Burn. Und einige von uns sind auch immer wieder aktiv in der Mitorganisation des Haus der Statistik (im Unterschied zu etlichen anderen der 45 Pioniergruppen). Das war nur durch eure Mitarbeit und Unterstützung möglich! Die Burner Embassy Berlin hat seit Begin Oktober 2019 bis jetzt (8.11.2020) über 5000€ Spenden erhalten, diese setzen sich zusammen aus:

• monatliche Dauerspenden zweckgebunden direkt an Berlin Burner e.V.: 1434,90€
• jährliche Dauerspenden zweckgebunden direkt an Berlin Burner e.V.: 755,00€
• einmalige Spenden zweckgebunden direkt an Berlin Burner e.V.: 995,00€
• monatliche und einmalige Spenden über Betterplace: 1261,56€
• Barspenden auf Embassy-Veranstaltungen: 669,70€

demgegenüber stehen Ausgaben für Baumaterial, Betriebskosten, Heizung etc. von ca. 898,75€ (allerdings sind noch nicht alle eingereichten Ausgaben bereits erstattet, da kommen noch ca. 300€ dazu)

und Nutzungsgebühren an das Haus der Statistik: 3032,12€ (incl. Kaution)

Unsere Reserve beträgt ca. 743€ (Kontostand 1043,14€ abzüglich geplanter Erstattungen).

Wir warten auch noch auf die Jahresstromabrechnung, die vermutlich zwischen 120€ und 150€ liegen wird.

Als wir letztes Jahr loszogen und Spendenzusagen einsammelten, damit die Burner Embassy Berlin überhaupt starten konnte, hat niemand von uns mit etwas wie Corona mit Lockdowns, Veranstaltungsverboten, Kurzarbeit, Jobverlust gerechnet. Wir konnten im Frühjahr und Sommer deutlich seltener unsere Spendenbox auf den Tisch stellen als ursprünglich geplant, weil wir drei Monate gar keine Veranstaltungen vor Ort hatten. Bei den monatlichen Spender:innen haben wir bisher glücklicherweise nur einzelne Spender:innen-Abgänge zu verzeichnen. Bei den zugesagten jährlichen Spenden stehen wir jetzt von dem nächsten jährlichen Spendenzeitraum. Unsere Hoffnung ist, dass möglichst viele der jährlichen Spender:innen bei ihrer Zusage bleiben können (wir schreiben euch noch mal extra an). Wir verstehen natürlich, das die aktuellen Umstände etliche Lebenspläne über den Haufen geworfen haben, und wer nicht mehr spenden kann, sollte das auch nicht tun. Aber jede Spende hilft uns, die Embassy für die Nutzung bei Winter und Corona fit zu machen. Wir brauchen bessere Lüftung und Heizung, um überhaupt legal und erträglich drinnen sein zu können, wenns draußen nicht mehr geht. Und es wäre schön, wenn wir den Winter nicht nur überleben, sondern auch genießen könnten.

Auch die langfristigen Perspektiven haben sich teilweise geändert. Derzeit sieht es so aus, als würde unser nächster Nutzungsvertrag bis Ende Juni 2021 laufen (Corona-Verschiebungen gibt es bisher anscheinend nicht), weil dann die Hochhäuser saniert werden. Es kann aber sein, dass die 4 Gebäudeteile nicht auf einmal zur Baustelle werden, sondern abschnittsweise, was uns mehr Zeit am jetzigen Ort geben könnte. Zusätzlich gibt es Planungen, sowohl das noch leerstehende ehemalige Rechenzentrum mit vielen kleineren Räumen zu beziehen und außerdem (isolierte?) Container/Tempohomes statt der Parkplätze entlang der Otto-Braun-Strasse aufzustellen, und zwar für bis zu 5 Jahren. Das könnte zwar einen Umzug in einen kleineren Raum bedeuten, gäbe uns aber eine langfristige Perspektive, denn danach soll die Dauernutzung in den dann sanierten Räumen in Haus A (Karl-Marx-Allee) beginnen. Ob und wie weit wir alle diese Wege gehen, hängt von den Wünschen und der Unterstützung durch die Community ab. Wir machen hier neue Erfahrungen, die nicht immer alle einfach sind: als Schnittstelle zwischen Burner Community und der Stadt, gelegentliche Konflikte mit der Nachbarschaft wegen Lärm, und für uns das Akzeptieren von Haus- und anderen selbstgegebenen Regeln, als nur kleiner Teil eines größeren städtischen Projekts. Das muss man wollen, insbesondere wenn sich später in neuen, beheizten Räumen die Miete signifikant erhöhen wird (pro m2 derzeit 3€ und nach der Pionierphase 6-10€). Andererseits gibt es wenig andere so zentrale Orte in Berlin, wo die Burner Community regelmäßig und inhaltlich selbstbestimmt zusammenkommen kann, und wir gleichzeitig umgeben sind von projekterfahrenen Nachbar:innen. Das kann uns helfen, insbesondere was die Wirkung auf die Welt im Burner-Stil betrifft, ob wir nun eine Arbeitsgruppe von „Burners without Borders“ gründen oder andere Wege beschreiten.

Der Lockdown Light wurde und wird für Verbesserungen an der Embassy genutzt, unser Build-Team ist immer wieder aktiv. Wir werden auch an einem offiziellen Hygienekonzept arbeiten, welches (zumindest in nächster Zeit) Pflicht für offizielle Kulturveranstaltungen (wie die in der Embassy stattfindenen ist) und möglicherweise auch an die Behörden übermittelt werden muss. Damit wir nach dem 30. November 2020 hoffentlich wieder in der Embassy zusammenkommen können. Bis dahin gibt es jeden Mittwoch abend die Virtual Embassy auf unserem Videoserver:

Just over a year ago we received our first user contract. Since then, the Burner Embassy has grown and prospered, and we have spent many wonderful days and evenings in the room itself (especially before Corona), on the terrace and in the courtyard. Before and after the first lockdown we had events almost every week. These were the usual five monthly events of Berlin Burner e.V. (during the Multiverse-Burn even every day of the week), the planning meetings for the summer events (before the lockdown), our visibility through participation in the monthly Haus der Statistik KO-Markt, through outdoor art and support of the Rainbow-Week at the HdS by queer Burners. In addition, there were a number of events from the Burner community, working meetings of other pioneer groups of the house and our burns for the opening ceremony (at that time >150 people could come) and the multiverse burn. And some of us are always active in the co-organization of the House of Statistics (in contrast to many others of the 45 pioneer groups). This was only possible with your cooperation and support! The Burner Embassy Berlin has received over 5000€ in donations since the beginning of October 2019 up to now (Nov 8th 2020):

• monthly donations for the Embassy directly to Berlin Burner e.V.: 1434.90€
• annual permanent donations for the Embassy directly to Berlin Burner e.V.: 755.00€
• one-time donations for the Embassy directly to Berlin Burner e.V.: 995.00€
• monthly and one-time donations for the Embassy via Betterplace: 1261.56€
• Cash donations at Embassy events: 669.70€

on the other hand there are expenses for building material, operating costs, heating etc. of about 898.75€ (however, not all submitted expenses have been reimbursed yet, there are about 300€ to be added)

and usage fees to the House of Statistics: 3032.12€ (incl. deposit)

Our reserve is about 743€ (account balance 1043.14€ minus planned refunds).

We are also still waiting for the annual electricity bill, which will probably be between 120€ and 150€.

When we went out last year and collected pledges of donations so that the Burner Embassy Berlin could start at all, none of us expected something like Corona with lockdowns, event bans, short-time work, job loss. In spring and summer we were able to put our donation box on the table much less often than originally planned because we had no events on site for three months. Fortunately, we have so far only had a few donors who have left the monthly donations. With the promised annual donations, we are now starting the next annual donation period. Our hope is that as many of the annual donors as possible will be able to keep their promise (we will write to you again). We understand that the current circumstances have thrown a lot of life plans out of order, and if you can’t donate any more, you shouldn’t do so either. But every donation helps us to make the Embassy fit for use in Winter and Corona. We need better ventilation and heating in order to be able to be legal and bearable indoors when it is no longer possible outside. And it would be nice if we could not only survive the winter, but also enjoy it.

The long-term perspectives have also changed in part. At present, it looks as if our next usage contract will run until the end of June 2021 (there are apparently no corona shifts to date), because that is when the high-rise buildings will be renovated. However, it is possible that the 4 buildings will not become a construction site all at once, but in sections, which could give us more time at the current location. In addition, there are plans to move into the still empty former data center with many smaller rooms and also to set up (isolated?) containers/tempohomes instead of the parking lots along Otto-Braun-Strasse for up to 5 years. Although this could mean moving to a smaller space, it would give us a long-term perspective, because after that the permanent use of the then renovated rooms in house A (Karl-Marx-Allee) should start. Whether and how far we all go down these paths depends on the wishes and support of the community. We are making new experiences here, which are not always easy: being an interface between the burner community and the city, occasional conflicts with the neighborhood because of noise, and for us the acceptance of house rules and other self-imposed rules, being only a small part of a larger city project. This is something you have to want, especially if the rent in new, heated rooms will increase significantly later (per m2 currently 3€ and after the pioneer phase 6-10€). On the other hand, there are few other such central places in Berlin, where the Burner Community can meet regularly and self-determined in terms of content, and at the same time we are surrounded by project-experienced neighbors. This can help us, especially in terms of the effect on the world in Burner style, whether we start a working group of „Burners without Borders“ or take other paths.

The Lockdown Light was and is used for improvements to the Embassy, our build team is always active. We will also work on an official hygiene concept, which (at least in the near future) will be mandatory for official cultural events (such as those that take place at the Embassy) and may have to be submitted to the authorities. So that we can hopefully meet again in the Embassy after November 30, 2020. Until then, the Virtual Embassy will be available every Wednesday evening on our video server:
